If you have the misfortune to live with very kind neighbours who undergo the daily trials of OCD and a have an inordinate fondness for the clearest products of the former Soviet Union, you could very well find this in your mail box.
It says:

" This is not old paper and therefore cannot be regarded as part of the official criteria of the weekly cleaning orders"

This isn't ours, our downstair neighbour got one too and he has written on it

"If this isn't junk mail - what is?"

I found the same thing written on my copy of the local free magazine -The Schwaben Journal - it is just like those dreadful local authority publications from Scotland and you might be surprised to discover that the German version manages to be more worthless and pointless than our home grown stuff. However I have asked Susi to call them and to remove our name from their mailing list on the grounds that it is causing a war between the citizens of the free world and the citizens of Finlandia. We should then publish the telephone number so that anyone else can cancel.

Of course it is only possible for companies to do this because her in Germany we have the very important Department of Names and Addresses - Das Einwohnermeldeamt who appear to have no problem suppling everyone in the known universe with your personal details despite this appearing to be a breach of the European Convention on Human Rights.

Finlandia is of course not made in the former Soviet Union and try getting onto their official website!

The January Sales Despite today being a Bank holiday in the UK it isn't a bank holiday here in Germany. Bank holidays which fall on a weekend are still holidays and by some curious process still count as holidays. In the UK, when Christmas falls on a weekend the country usually closes down for three weeks because of the two additional days off the working week. Not so here - if the public holiday falls on a weekend - tough. It just means all the shops are closed and since they are all closed on Sunday anyway there's no loss. Monday the 3rd is not a holiday and the January sales sort of begin. Well not really - they don't need to because the entire nation in the South appears to turn up at either Media Markt or Ikea for the bargain of the year. Ever since we got a dodgy washing machine from Amazon we haven't really bought anything that big. Not that it was the fault of Amazon but their crap delivery men.
