The Bistro 2006

Well, it was as if I hadn’t left. The only the thing that had change were the regulars. The old regulars were still there and the new regulars were the sorts of punters I would never have let in the door.

Amongst the staff were the people who had never left, Sue is still in the kitchen, Janet is still the manager and Ronnie, although I missed him, is still behind the bar. Kirsty is back behind the bar, wee David is a new addition to the bar staff, Joanne is in the kitchen and Pat has been promoted to Kitchen Toto. The downstairs now has the added attraction of a pool table and a football machine, which Joanne a) suggested I would never have agreed to (correct) and b) it didn’t have any effect on the numbers of regulars who remained regulars.


Still crazy after all these years

All of the characteristic pictures have been taken down and Janet told me that the rather marvellous photograph of Bistro founding father – Mr Barnton Senior – was damaged irrevocably by water and damp. The roof still leaks above the stairs too.

The January Sales Despite today being a Bank holiday in the UK it isn't a bank holiday here in Germany. Bank holidays which fall on a weekend are still holidays and by some curious process still count as holidays. In the UK, when Christmas falls on a weekend the country usually closes down for three weeks because of the two additional days off the working week. Not so here - if the public holiday falls on a weekend - tough. It just means all the shops are closed and since they are all closed on Sunday anyway there's no loss. Monday the 3rd is not a holiday and the January sales sort of begin. Well not really - they don't need to because the entire nation in the South appears to turn up at either Media Markt or Ikea for the bargain of the year. Now why anyone would consider a little air filter a bargain stumps me. Ever since we got a dodgy washing machine from Amazon we haven't really bought anything that big. Not that it was the fault of Amazon but their crap delivery men. But since then we tend to look at things in shops and then check them out on amazon. The best deal gets our money. In almost every case it is amazon.
